What do Liam Howlett, Chris Packham, Jo Whiley, Shepard Fairey & Jake Chapman all have in common? They’re all forming a band together. Hmm, not quite. They’re all collector’s of Dan Baldwin’s artwork.

A certain Godfather of Pop Art has some nice things to say about Baldwin’s work too:

“Looking at Dan’s work is like meeting old friends for me. It looks as though at some point in our careers we used the same casting agency. I am flattered that Dan writes that he was influenced by my work. It’s fascinating to see Mickey and all the chaps used in a newer different way, and I have really enjoyed his work.” (Sir Peter Blake)

The artist says himself that his art is “about the fine line between the sinister and the beautiful” which pretty much says all you need to know. Familiar icons of popular culture find themselves at sea in the Baldwin’s menacing environments where political themes are rarely far away.

Contemporary painter and ceramicist Dan Baldwin is often labelled as part of the Young British Artist movement but I’m featuring him here because I think he’s making great work regardless of labels or celebrity buyers. Also great to see an artist who frequently auctions off his work for charity.

Dan was signed up with PMM Art Projects, the brainchild of Green Day manager Pat Magnarella & former A&R man Roger Klein as a “disruptive art business model” but appears to be no longer. Other artists under the PMM umbrella included Charming Baker and D*Face.
