Well, whatever you think of these Marc Quinn prints you can’t say they’re short of colour. These are, ahem, no shrinking violets.

So how did the artist who rose to prominence by casting a life size sculpture of his head (Self, 1991)in his own blood end up doing a series of vibrant flower photographs?

Quinn’s In The Night Garden series digitally assembles arrangements of flowers that would never be seen together in nature. Quinn ramps up the contrast, colours and combinations to create a slightly surreal and other wordly aesthetic.

Though it might be difficult to distinguish at first a common thread runs from blood head to flower bed. Quinn’s 2000 sculpture Garden presents some clues.

Quinn collected 1,000 flowers from around the globe before sinking them in twenty-five tonnes of low viscosity silicon oil held at -20 degrees celsius.

Quinn said of the work “The flowers, when they freeze, become pure image. They become an image of perfect flower, because in reality their matter is dead and they are suspended in a state of transformation between pure image and pure matter.”

Substitute silicon oil for the digital domain and the threads of beauty, death and altering Mother Nature for aesthetic purposes remain intact.

Marc Quinn was born in London in 1964 and is known as part of the Young British Artists movement in the 1990s.
