David Hockney Gets A Bigger Book

“Not your average art book” said The Guardian’s Dalya Alberge as her review desk presumably collapsed under the 35kg weight of ‘David Hockney – A Bigger Book’.

I’d be more than happy to sacrifice a desk or two to own this behemoth of bookdom. If you’re listening Taschen, I’m totally okay with covering postage (or renting a heavy goods vehicle) for my complimentary copy. While I await that email here’s the Hockney SUMO edition arriving at Art Market’s gallery…

“We did about 7 or 8 colour proofs. I think the reproductions are the best I’ve seen”

1953-2016 – Over Sixty Years Of Hockney

My love of Hockney’s work stretches back over 30 years to my final year of high school when the 17 year old me met the 17 year old Hockney via the same self portrait collage reproduced on the opening pages of A Bigger Book…

Despite our generational gap the portrait still looked fresh and accessible. In fact Hockney’s inspiration arrived just in time. I’d just been ‘commissioned’ (by a friend of my parents) to do a portrait of their… erm… rabbits. Over the next few weeks I produced my first (and most definitely last) rabbit portrait collage. Yes. I did that.

Anyway, back to Hockney’s teenage collage. It’s surprising how much it foreshadows his entire career – an audacious eye for colour, unerring draughtsmanship, playful humour and an endless fascination with trying new materials and methods of invention.

“I think just reproducing things so big, it makes you see things. It’s the scale of the book that is the beautiful thing.”

The Taschen Hockney SUMO Edition

This is my long way round of saying I’m more than a wee bit excited about Taschen’s release of David Hockney – A Bigger Book. It’s the first time Taschen have dedicated a SUMO edition to a painter so Hockney now sits alongside Muhammed Ali & The Rolling Stones on the SUMO bookshelf. Not bad for a Bradford lad.

Working together with Hockney over 10 months, Taschen made 19 models of the book before arriving at the glorious final version.

Taschen don’t do things by half with their SUMO editions. Their first ever SUMO release on Helmut Newton became the most expensive book produced in the 20th century selling for a cool $430,000 at auction.

“A book like this shouldn’t have much text. Only this page. It contains work from 1953 when I started at Bradford School Of Art aged 16 up to this year, 2016. It is almost chronological and entirely visual.

I ask, how do I see the world? Well, through time, which we can’t escape. So there’s a hierarchy, I see something first and then second and so on. What is it I see and how do I depict it?

I do NOT think the world looks like photographs. Which is only one way of depicting the world. I am interested in perspective, but that means isometric and reverse perspective as well, all perfectly valid forms of it.

I have always been affected by the place I am in. London, Paris, L.A. and Yorkshire dominate this book. The world around me. And all the world’s a stage. ”
~ David Hockney, L.A. April 2016 ~
